I think there is a very narrow view of success in our country and thus in our educational system. When we can appreciate learning for learning's sake, as you have outlined then we won't have to worry about all the issues that prevent our children from progressing.

I took AP classes in high school, and yes, they are not for everybody. But that doesn't mean that teachers can't challenge themselves to give all children a fair chance.
