For some it seems as though first impressions are lasting impressions and this seems to have been the case for McCain in regards to Palin.
Beautiful, intelligent, and a staunch conservative, Plaines appeared to appeal to a group of Republicans who were not connecting to McCain. Never mind the fact that Palin would be one of the most inexperienced Presidents in history or that few Americans had ever heard of her or knew of her political convictions. None of that matters when you are Miss Congeniality (Palin won this title in 1984).
Palin seemed like the perfect pick. It is hard to argue against the war in Iraq with someone who has a child fighting in Iraq. It is hard to argue against abortion with someone who has a child with Downs Syndrome.
However, it is also hard to argue for abstinence only education when you are someone who has a teenage daughter who has conceived a child out of wedlock. It is also hard to argue against big government and more accountability in terms of spending when you are someone who has more earmarked deals than the majority of other U.S. governors.
A number of minor “news quakes” have rocked the McCain-Palin ticket in the days since his announcement that Palin would be his running mate. A pregnant unwed teenaged daughter, a history of earmarking work with lobbyists, and affiliation with the Alaskan Independence Party (which questions whether statehood is good for Alaska), are all things that should have propelled McCain away from Palin as the Republican Vice Presidential nominee-if McCain truly knew these things about Palin.
Poor John McCain. It seems as if he failed to do his homework. And as any student will tell you, failing to do homework can result in dire consequences come report card time…

Not to mention "McBush" waited to search her record after he awarded her the nomination.
Hopefully people will see through this political tactic.
I think we should settle this like adults. A fight between Hilary and Palin. It seems only fair. If she can withstand getting the shit kicked out of her by Hilary, then she's ready for America!
Mr. Kirk, your wit never ceases to amaze me! I love this post. You said everything I have been thinking (believe it or not, I have been keeping up all of this because my roommate is a staunch Obama fan, and all we did last week was watch the democratic national convention!) The pregnant, 17 year old daughter is all anyone on campus can talk about. He only did it to try and gain the female votes that would have gone toward Hilary...
I've never replied before because I'm too lazy to create an account, but I love your blog had to throw in my two cents.
How can Sarah Palin mock Obama being a community organizer twenty years ago? She entered beauty pageants, killed caribou, and owned a car wash before entering politics, none of which add to her v.p. qualifications as far as I can tell.
And why does having a child with down's syndrome prove how strong her pro-life beliefs are? Being pro-choice doesn't mean terminating any less than perfect pregnancy. It means supporting a woman's right to choose what happens to her own body. Palin supporters impyling that she would have chosen to abort her child if she were not pro-life is insulting.
However, I do think she's a good public speaker.
I haven't forgiven your harsh treatment of the meerkat tragedy.
I don't understand how he could make such a rush decision on such an important matter. This is for the presidency of the United States of America for goodness sake!!
Will... LOL...We have to catch up! How's Amy? The three of us should get together and see a good film as soon as one comes out..
Lydia, I am waiting on my official Oglethorpe update...
Jennifer... Get that blog up and going!!!
Dione, with 72 years under McCain's belt, she may be the next president if he is elected.
